INTERVIR+ Innovative and Sustainable Mobility in Funchal
The Innovative and Sustainable Mobility in Funchal project is part of the Operational Program for the Valorization of Economic Potential and Territorial Cohesion of the RAM (Autonomous Region of Madeira), known as the Intervir+ Program, which was adopted by the European Commission through Decision C (2007) 4622 on October 5, 2007.
The Program is co-financed by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) and aims to ensure regional economic growth and employment, environmental protection policies, social cohesion, and territorial development.
Duration: October 2008 to December 2013
Objectives:
The company Horários do Funchal aims to contribute to the dissemination of sustainable vehicles in the urban area of Funchal, increasing its performance in favor of environmental preservation and public health. To this end, Horários do Funchal intends to evaluate the possibility of introducing new buses with innovative and less polluting technology (hybrid or electric) into its urban service. Horários do Funchal also plans to introduce a new typology of small and medium-sized buses into its fleet, representing a significant innovation in the structure and management of the collective public passenger transport service. This will allow for service during off-peak hours and on routes with lower demand, improving the efficiency of local public transport, reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, and consequently achieving a better ratio between passengers transported and the environmental and energy impact of the service provided. The introduction of the new buses will be accompanied by monitoring and communication mechanisms intended to evaluate their impact on the urban environment, verify the positive effects predicted for this measure, and present results throughout its implementation.
The Innovative and Sustainable Mobility in Funchal project (CIVITAS MIMOSA) will provide the financial support for the development of innovative systems to support the planning and logistics of complex public transport fleets, the communication strategies necessary for the success of the CIVITAS measures, and the resulting evaluation activities, which will allow for the assessment of their effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability.
