INTERVIR+ Wireless Passenger Detection

INTERVIR+ Wireless Passenger Detection

The Wireless Passenger Detection project is part of the Operational Program for the Valorization of Economic Potential and Territorial Cohesion of the RAM (Autonomous Region of Madeira), known as the Intervir+ Program, which was adopted by the European Commission through Decision C (2007) 4622 on October 5, 2007.

The Program is co-financed by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) and aims to ensure regional economic growth and employment, environmental protection policies, social cohesion, and territorial development.

Duration: June 2009 to December 2013

Objectives:

The new Wireless Passenger Detection system, already tested by Horários do Funchal, utilized Bluetooth antennas installed on buses to obtain a representative sample of passenger trips, including the specific locations of boarding and alighting points. Based on this project, an infrastructure will be developed to further explore passenger counting and localization. This system will be capable of supporting multiple innovative wireless information services aimed at both current and potential public transport passengers. These information services will support the promotion of public transport, particularly the "Linha Verde" (Green Line) measure of the CIVITAS MIMOSA project as an "on-street" information system.

The objective of this project is the collection and analysis of passenger distribution across the territory to serve as a guiding element for the public transport network planning system, ensuring that the service offered better aligns with the actual needs of users. This system will also allow for the provision of useful information to passengers at bus stops following a subscription to specific information services via the Web or Bluetooth. The project aims to achieve the following summarized objectives within the target area, specifically in the implementation zone of the CIVITAS MIMOSA "Linha Verde" measure:

• Improve the efficiency of the public transport network;
• Improve and expand customer information services;
• Increase the quality of the public transport service.
