MIT-PORTUGAL – Institutional and Corporate Partners Agreement

The MIT-Portugal Program is a large-scale international collaboration involving MIT, the National Government, and universities and industries across Portugal to develop education and research programs related to systems engineering. This high-level partnership represents a strategic commitment by the Portuguese Government to science, technology, and higher education, leveraging MIT’s expertise in these critical areas to strengthen the national knowledge base through investment in human capital and institutional capacity building.

The program's objectives include:
a) Promoting the development and demonstration of new technologies and energy solutions in island contexts;
b) Improving scientific and technological knowledge in the field of energy;
c) Catalyzing innovation, entrepreneurship, advanced training, and new talent and business opportunities within the energy sector.

The program features the following areas of cooperation:
a) Valorization of endogenous energy resources;
b) Energy efficiency;
c) Development and demonstration of sustainable energy systems;
d) Study of sustainable tourism solutions, particularly regarding their interactions with energy, water, and transport, where extensive research and innovation opportunities exist;
e) Development and application of project financing systems;
f) Transfer of technical and scientific knowledge;
g) Advanced training and exchange of researchers and technicians.

Duration: From March 2008 until the conclusion of the MIT Portugal Program.
