CIVITAS DESTINATIONS

CIVITAS DESTINATIONS

The CIVITAS DESTINATIONS project represents the European Commission’s major commitment toward the integration of mobility strategies that contribute to sustainable tourism.
An ambitious package of innovative solutions will be developed across six European islands: Madeira (Portugal); Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain); Elba (Italy); La Valetta (Malta); Rethymno (Greece); and Limassol (Cyprus).

The project is expected to increase the cities' tourist attractiveness as well as the quality of life and well-being of residents and tourists, increase social equity, and improve the competitiveness of the local economy by reducing costs associated with the transport of people and goods.

European Union Horizon 2020 Program for Research and Innovation (Project No. 689031).

Duration: September 2016 to August 2020

Objectives:

The project aims to support the transformation of small and medium-sized European cities—located in island contexts with a strong tourist focus—into sustainable tourist destinations through the implementation of integrated sustainable mobility solutions and the improvement of the efficiency of transport systems for people and goods.   Specific objectives of the project include: improving accessibility, reducing pollutant emissions and improving air quality, reducing energy consumption, increasing social equity, and improving the effectiveness and integration between transport and mobility services.

Activities:

The project takes a holistic approach to sustainable urban mobility, guiding its actions through the following intervention pillars:
- Sustainable urban mobility planning for residents and visitors;
- Safe, accessible, and attractive public spaces for the entire population;
- Shared and electric mobility on the path toward zero-emission transport;
- Cleaner and smarter urban logistics in tourist destinations;
- Mobility management and awareness-raising for sustainable mobility;
- Attractive, accessible, cleaner, and more efficient public transport.
